What: A Hip-Hop Classroom Named Saturdays is a crash course in Hip-Hop fundamentals, art appreciation & aesthetics.It is an advanced program for teens on using the 5 elements for personal empowerment, civic engagements, social justice, community and economic development. Where: Elastic Arts Foundation, 2830 N Milwaukee Ave, 2nd floor, Chicago, (Except Saturday July 24th* See below) When: Saturdays in July 2010. 10am-Noon. (July 3rd, 10th, 17th, *24th meets at Millennium Park, & 31st) How: 5 power workshops where participants interact with guest artists, hip-hop historians, entrepreneurs, music business professionals, and more.Workshops will feature hip-hop demonstrations, lectures, multi-media, hands on creative projects, and showcases. Weekly Overview: Week 1 July 3 Hip-Hop 101: What is hip-hop? History, artists, ideology, aesthetics, local connections, influences, etc. Week 2 July 10 Careers In Hip-Hop: Explore careers in hip-hop beyond the familiar roles of rapper and producer. Learn about the roles of accountants, agents, marketing & public relations professionals, lawyers, engineers, choreographers, sound and lighting, event management, etc. Week 3 July 17 Hip-Hop for Social Change: How to use hip-hop to influence and affect progressive social change.This session focuses on Hip-hop and community, politics, environment, and technology. Week 4 July 24 Chicago Hip-Hop/All Headz On Deck Chicago hip-hop concert and family picnic at Millennium Park from Noon-3pm. Week 5 July 31 The Future: Individual goal setting sessions.Each student, along with a mentor/advisor completes a personal action plan for his or her own progressive use and practice of hip-hop as a tool for empowerment. ______________________________
